One killed, house burnt as rival youths clash in Ogun

One person has been reported dead in a clash between some rival young guys in Agosasa, Ipokia Local Government area of Ogun State, Ottagistreel  reports.

The deceased man, who was identified as Alari David, was allegedly stabbed to death by three brothers and their friend on Thursday.

Locals identified the suspects as Umar Musa, Taiwo Musa, Kehinde Musa and Kehinde Oyajinmi.

Our correspondent gathered that the crisis started on Wednesday evening when David was first attacked by his alleged killers during a brawl.

On Thursday, David was said to have gone to the Musas’ house to report the incident to their parents.

An indigene of Agosasa, who did not want to be named, disclosed that another crisis ensued when David got to his attackers’ house without meeting their parents at home.

“They stabbed the boy on Tuesday and he went to their house with his friends to report those that stabbed him to their parents.

“Getting there, they didn’t meet the parents but they met the guys with knives,” the source said.

It was gathered that another fight broke out and “the boys attacked David again, stabbing him in the chest.”

“He was immediately rushed to Olutunu Hospital in Agosasa, but he died at the gate of the hospital,” the source disclosed.

Another source revealed that David’s friends, who were infuriated by his killing, set the suspected stabbers’ parents’ house on fire, causing serious mayhem in the ancient Ogun Community.

Our correspondent learnt that it took the intervention of the traditional institution in Agosasa to restore peace.

As of Friday, the three brothers and their friends are yet to be arrested as they fled the town immediately, a police source, who pleaded anonymity, told Ottagistreel

End SARS: Ogun prosecutes four policemen for murder

In line with the request of the Nigerian youths that policemen involved in police brutality and extra-judicial killings be brought to book, the Ogun State Government is set to prosecute for policemen for alleged murder and manslaughter, Ottagistreel reports.

A statement by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ogun State, Mr. Akingbolahan Adeniran, on Thursday, invited the public to monitor the “criminal cases against the defendant police officers.”

Akingbolahan revealed that the state is prosecuting one Inspector Wasiu Lawal for murder on November 10 at the High Court of Ogun State, sitting in Ipokia.

Also, Okoi Obi will be facing charges for manslaughter December 2, at the Ijebu-Ode High Court.

Ottagistreel reported that both Inspectors Niyi Ogunsoro and Ahmed Mohammed will be charged for murder at the High Court sitting in Abeokuta and Ilaro respectively, saying dates of the hearing will be communicated.

The Ogun Attorney-General informed that additional cases would be added as soon as charges against defendants are concluded.

End SARS: Ogun youths suspend protest

Organisers of the End SARS protest in Ogun State have suspended the protest on Wednesday.

Governor Dapo Abiodun confirmed this in a statement this evening.

According to him, the original organisers of the protests have since realized that the protests have been hijacked, saying they “sent out a notice that they have suspended street protests.”

Abiodun, who commended the peaceful conduct of the genuine youth protesters in Ogun State, called on others still purporting to be protesting to return home “as it is obvious that hoodlums and miscreants have hijacked the lofty idea”.

Ogun State Governor, commiserated with the families of those who have lost their loved ones and properties in the END SARS violence in different parts of the country.

He described the deaths and arson as “unfortunate and unwarranted”.

The Governor expressed displeasure over the burning of Atan Ota police station; the killing of the Divisional Crime Officer and one other person; the attack on the Divisional Police Officer; sporadic gunshots by hoodlums in some locations in the state; violent supremacy battles among miscreants and blockade in some parts of the state, among others.

He warned that strident measures may be announced should acts of breach of public safety and security continue.

While calling for demonstrators to bring the protests to an end and allow for the full implementation of their demands, Abiodun urged security agents to exercise caution in dealing with the #EndSARS protesters to avoid further loss of lives and properties.

He acknowledged the right of the people to protest but regretted that “blockade of highways and other roads, destruction of public and private property, and unfortunate loss of lives are clear deviations from the original intention of the protest.”

Governor Abiodun who has deployed security men and women to ensure an end to the violence, directed the security team to continue to patrol the major streets to ensure peace and tranquility in the day-to-day activities of citizens.

“I plead with all our public and private hospitals to treat all in need of medical attention brought to their facilities”, the statement added.

The Governor further said: “For us, the lives of all citizens and residents of Ogun State matter. We must also recognize that any property destroyed directly diminishes our commonwealth and undermines the momentum of our development. It is our joint responsibility to ensure safety of lives and property and we must all understand that the current state of violence does not do anyone any good.

“The people of Ogun State should please report all acts of molestation, breaches of peace or extortion by calling 112. Our Quick Response Squad (QRS) alongside other law enforcement teams are on alert to respond quickly. Once again, appeal to our people to allow peace to reign do not attack law enforcement,’’ the statement concluded

End SARS: Please stop killing us – Ogun police beg protesters

The Ogun State Police Command has appealed to End SARS protesters in the state to stop killing and maiming policemen.

The police also begged the irate youths to stop attacking police stations all in the name of expressing their grievances.

The Ogun police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, made this plea Wednesday, on behalf of the State Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun.

According to Oyeyemi, the hitherto peaceful protest embarked upon by youths across Ogun has taken a dangerous and violent dimension, saying “some people with ulterior motives are now using the opportunity to commit all sorts of heinous crimes.”

Oyeyemi also confirmed a DAILY POST report,  when he said, “Early this morning, the protesters went to Atan-Ota and set the Police station there ablaze; and subsequently murdered the D.C.O, DSP Augustine Ogbeche in cold blood. A civilian also died in the process while some arms were carted away.”

He said they also inflicted serious injuries on the DPO, SP Sikiru Olugbenga, whose whereabouts, he said, is yet unknown.

Oyeyemi confirmed further that some group of boys attacked Obada-oko divisional headquarters in Abeokuta and vandalized it.

In view of this, the Commissioner of Police Ogun State Command is appealing to the youths to eschew violence and embrace peace as the violence will do no one good.

He is equally appealing to traditional institutions, parents and other critical stakeholders to prevail on the youths to stop this carnage and give the government a chance to address the situation,”.

Oyeyemi reminded the youths that since the commencement of the protests, the police in Ogun have been nice and civil to them, even when some of the officers were injured and stations damaged; saying, “We even went ahead and released all the 36 suspects we arrested.”

Pleading for understanding, the PPRO said, “if in the course of handling the protests anybody feels offended we plead for understanding and not retaliatory measures including killing and maiming policemen or burning and damaging of police stations.”

He assured that the command will ensure that justice is served to any aggrieved person.

“Please and please, let us continue to embrace peace rather than violence. The Command sincerely appeals to the youths. Parents and guardians are also enjoined to help rein in their children and wards.”

End SARS: Tension in Ogun, police officer, protester feared killed, stations attacked

There is palpable tension in Ogun State as hoodlums appear to have hijacked the End SARS protest.

On Wednesday morning, an eyewitness told Ottagistreel that a young man, who was one of those mounting roadblocks in Atan Ota, was allegedly shot dead by the police.

In retaliation, the irate youths were said to have gone after the police, killing an officer.

They were also said to have set the Atan Ota police station on fire.

Efforts to reach the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer were not successful as he did not pick calls to his phone.

In Abeokuta, our correspondent gathered that the Lafenwa and Obada Oko police stations were attacked and looted by hoodlums, who were said to have also freed those in custody.

Likewise in Obantoko, some youths claiming to be Okada riders said they were protesting the increase in the cost of their daily tickets.

While protesting, they were reported to have unleashed terror on residents of the area.

The situation, it was gathered, is not different in other parts of Ogun State as people fear what could be the end of the melee.

Reacting to the ugly incidents, Gov Dapo Abiodun said in a tweet:

“Yesterday, I advised our youths to protest peacefully and not erect blockades on roads or disturb other citizens.

“I am informed by peaceful protesters that hoodlums have hijacked the protests and are attacking innocent citizens. I am pleading with these elements to shun violence and not allow things to degenerate.”

Meanwhile, soldiers and anti-riot policemen have since been mobilised to ensure the security of lives and properties.

End SARS: Gov Abiodun closes all schools, bans Okada in Ogun

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has ordered the immediate closure of all schools in Ogun State from now till October 26, Ottagistreel reports.

The Governor disclosed this on Tuesday evening at a press conference he addressed at Okemosan, Abeokuta.

Abiodun also ordered the ban of the operations of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada in Ogun State tomorrow, October 21.

According to the Governor, this became necessary following cases of violence that have arisen as a result of the ongoing End SARS protest across Ogun state.

He expressed sadness that an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service was killed on Tuesday at Yewa South by some mob on Okada.

According to him, his administration has identified with the protesters and has been doing all that was necessary to ensure their demands are met.

He recalled how he ordered the release of some of the End SARS protesters who were arrested for vandalising public properties in Ogun State, saying he also ordered the Attorney General of the state to drop charges against them.

However, he said while the genuine protesters have remained peaceful in their demonstrations, some hoodlums have hijacked the protest, causing violence, burning police stations, vandalising properties and mounting roadblocks to extort the public while preventing others from going about their normal businesses.

Abiodun said he held a meeting with security chiefs in the state today where many options, including the imposition of curfew, were considered.

However, he explained that other options were considered in place of a curfew

End SARS: Ogun releases hotlines to report police brutality, rights violation

Following the End SARS protest and calls by Nigerian youths to end police brutality, the Ogun State Government has announced hotlines through which the judicial panel of investigation could be reached by the public.

The Ogun Governor, Dapo Abiodun, said the panel could “be reached at the Conference room of the New Judiciary Complex, Kobape, Abeokuta, through an e-mail: endsarsjudicialpanel@ogunstate.gov.ng or through the following numbers: 07080601223, 07080601224 and 07080601225.”

Abiodun made this known while inaugurating the panel at his Okemosan office in Abeokuta on Monday.

The Governor said his administration has put in place a conducive atmosphere for the panel to meet and receive memoranda from the public.

Aside the Judicial Panel of Investigation on Human Rights Abuses in the state, the Ogun helmsman hinted that a Special Security and Human Rights Committee has also been set up under his chairmanship; adding that the Human Rights Complaint Office with an Ombudsman and two other members were also set up.

While calling on members of the panel and committees to make fairness, firmness, dedication and objectivity their watchwords, Abiodun appealed to the protesting youths to sheathe their swords, saying that governments at different levels and the various agencies of government are already acceding to their requests
